Everyday Moments

“Please Mom and Dad, share some more of your wisdom with us!”
After the laughter died down, my friend went on to say that her oldest son was thirty and she was still waiting to hear one of her children say that to her and her husband. She was teaching on the topic of healthy relationships in the context of family. And she was right. Kids don’t normally go to their parents and ask them to share from their wealth of wisdom. And most adults don’t ask for that either.
That’s where you come in, disciple maker. That college guy that leads your son’s small group probably isn’t going to ask you to help him understand how to integrate faith and life in his 20’s. Your next door neighbor probably won’t ring your doorbell and ask you to help her know what a biblical marriage looks like. Your relational world is full of “probably won’t.” That’s why we have to seize the everyday moments. That’s was my friend’s point in her teaching and it’s what I am thinking about in terms of discipleship.
That college guy? Tell him you are watching the game Saturday night and you’d love to have him drop by. Then be intentional about asking him about his faith-life on campus. The neighbor? Invite them over for a cookout and bring up the topic of hard it is to have a healthy marriage. You can think of another half-dozen “probably won’t” people in your sphere of influence. Now think about them in terms of an everyday moment … a moment that with a little intentionality from you could be life-changing for someone.
